We were very fortunate to receive some wonderful funding from the Sutton Soup event held in October of last year. Myself and volunteer baker Abi made the pitch and chatted to the 'Soup Dragons' about Free Cakes for Kids and what it means to us and to the families that we help. The much needed injection of funds has allowed us to provide all bakers with a board and a box to show off their creations. Also we now send a party pack to each family with candles, balloons and party blowers to help make the birthday celebrations even more special.
Abi and I returned to the recent Sutton Soup held in January to report back on how we are using the funds. As a thank you we brought along cakes to share with everyone, including an impressive 'Sutton Soup' Cake baked by Abi. Of course events like these are also a great way to spread the word about Free Cakes for Kids Sutton and to do a bit of networking. Another big bonus is the chance to get a few more volunteers to help with the group. Two new volunteers have already baked for local families and new volunteer Cerryn has given me some much needed advice on improving this website. Its very much a work in progress, but I think its looking better all ready. The next Sutton Soup is on 27th April and I shall be there to listen to another four local projects pitch for funds. Fancy coming along, then check out the Sutton Soup website for more details.

It was quite a busy December for Free Cakes for Kids Sutton. Early in the month we sold cakes and raised awareness about the group in the St Nicholas Centre with Emma from Free Cakes for Kids Croydon. Many thanks to Sue Hart and Rachel Bedford for baking cakes and for Rachel coming along to help.
It was a bit quiet, but we did sell a few cakes and talked to lots of people! We also baked Christmas party cakes for the Young Carers and Sutton Women's Aid, hope they enjoyed them! Good news on the partner organisation front as well. I have spoken to Sean at the council about helping families in temporary accomodation and have also got some contacts with social workers looking after families with disabled children. so hopefully lots more cakes to bake in 2014 Had a great time saturday afternoon meeting some of the other group coordinators in London and the South East. Many thanks to Emma ( Croydon), Cristina (Bromley), Janet ( Ealing), Cassie ( Highgate), Lorien ( Slough), and Angie( the soon to be up and running Epsom) for coming along and bringing huge amounts of cake! Also thanks to Kate for doing all sorts of media type things!!
It was great to put some faces to names and to hear about what everyone else is up to. We must do it again soon. So today I decided to join the 21st century and set up a website for Free Cakes for Kids Sutton. Its in its infancy at the moment and it will take me a while to make it look beautiful.
So we are now on Face Book, Twitter and you can Google us. But what we really want to be doing is baking more cakes for kids in the Sutton area. I'm hoping to contact some more organisations and perhaps remind a few that we have been in touch with before that we are here, spatulas at the ready! |
AuthorI'm Lynne O'Brien, Free Cakes for Kids Sutton organiser. I'm a keen home baker who wants to use my baking skills to make birthdays special for families who can't provide a cake for their child. This is all far more fun than my previous careers as a research scientist and a data manager! Archives
